We've improved on the standard disc in every area. The HED Jet disc is lighter, stiffer, stronger and straighter and aerodynamically more efficient. To achieve all this we've developed a new construction which mates quality traditional wheelbuilding with state-of-the-art composite technology.
Under the skin of the HED Jet disc is a spoked wheel, handbuilt in our workshop at Shoreview, MN. We call this the substrate wheel. Once this is trued and stress relieved, we bond wafer-thin carbon panels - the sides of the disc - to the hub, rim and spokes. We can make these so thin because the substrate wheel is the supporting structure. Lateral stiffness is completely uncompromised, but the new generation of HED discs have the vertical compliance of a spoked wheel - because essentially that's what they are - and none of the harshness of the old discs.
The latest lightweight C2 rim - as used by HED road racing wheels and all of the HED Jet wheel range - reduces rolling resistance and increases cornering grip.
The HED Jet disc incorporates a toroidal rim - an aerodynamic bulge that HED pioneered back in the 1990s, designed to smooth the airflow and keep it attached to the lenticular disc sides after it leaves the tyre sidewall, giving the Jet disc the lowest drag of any clincher disc.
