Kinetic-One “Team” Sponsorship Concept - We want you! Kinetic-One’s Pollard Wins A momentous achievement in any circumstances – Mark's performance is even more noteworthy as temperatures climbed as high as 91 degrees on the day. March 2008 Kinetic-One Elite Team: End of season update Tom Room in Europe 26th October 2007
Lake Geneva Croatia . Sadly my time spent racing in Europe has not produced the results I am capable of. My back wheel suffered flight damage and despite having my bike serviced the day before the race in Geneva, the problem was only picked up by a mechanic half an hour before the race. He insisted whislt in wildly gesticulating French that I should not race..........
I swam fairly well but was not feeling strong on the 6 lap bike course. On the 3rd lap there was a crash involving a motorbike cameraman lurking in the shadows at the base of the hill which brought down enough people to disconnect me from the pack and I continued to lose ground. I managed to gain a few places on the run but it has now been confirmed that the wheel problem meant I was losing a lot of power and which is why I got dropped on the hill.
Following the race I had a few days training in the Alps on a Teambath training camp. Through out this time I was in contact with Kinetic-One about my wheel issue, who were giving me constant advice. This is where their commitment to a high-quality service really came through for me, at less than 24 hours notice they sent me a replacement wheel to my over night stop in London before I headed out to race in Croatia. Andy at Kinetic-One has always prided himself on the top level service he provides to his customers and I think this incident typifies his approach to business and cycling.
The course in Croatia was unbelievably beautiful and dangerous. The bike weaved up a hillside with hair pin bends only for the course to descend the same route with no road markings, walls on the corners and some of the poorest road surface imaginable - riddled with tree roots. Fortunately we got the course changed the night before the race. Sadly one thing I could not change was the 35 degrees I would be racing in. I do not cope with the heat well and after 8km on the bike I was completely ruined. I finished the race with a 50min 10km but I finished - about a quater of the field did not!
Subsequently I have been so exhausted that I could not speak more than a few words for several days and only now, 3 weeks later, have I resumed light exercise. Just in time for my last race in Northumbria this weekend at which I will attempt to recoup some of my losses from a rather disappointing European trip.
Tom
. Although I only finished 27th in the London Triathlon I really
enjoyed the race and it's fired my passion for the rest of
the season.
I am now turning my focus to international ITU Points races in triathlon.
The points are Olympic ranking points with only the top 100 athletes in
the world eligible for Beijing. And as next year is Olympic year these
races are super competitive as everyone is desperate to rack up as many
points as possible. Although I will not be going to Beijing my coming
races will see me take on those athletes who will be there and I can't
wait.
This weekend (19th) sees me race in ITU Geneva. This is 2 weeks before
the World Championships and many athletes are using it as their last
sharpener so I expect that race to be pretty fast! Then following an
overnight stop in London I head straight to ITU Split (25th). Although
the championship contenders will be missing everyone who is not going
to Hamburg is going to Split so again a tough race. But with the very
top guys missing hopefully I will do well, I feel more rested and the
bike is running great so I'm optimistic of some strong results. Both
races will be on www.triathlon.org with the possibility of live
coverage.
I'd also like to take this chance to announce a new sponsor. They are
Whasp gels (www.whaspgel.com) which have a range on caffeine free to
caffeine loaded (more than red bull) gels. I used them to great effect
at London as I lead the chase pack on the bike and look forward to
using them on the international circuit. If you are interested in
trying them contact Kinetic-One through the website and we'll get some out to you.

Tom's Race Report
My aim at London was to qualify for the Elite U23 World Championships which was going to require a top 3 finish and to be with in 3% of eventual winner and World Champion Tim Don's time, a big ask but I'm always ready for a challenge.
I was ideally placed at the start of the swim and was following Dann Brook's feet through the chaos of the swim start. But as everyone headed for the inside line the inevitable jostling for places meant I lost position but I did pick up a black eye and a generally very sore face this morning thanks to some wild elbows!
I started the bike by myself having dropped my swim group with a quick transition and set out chasing down the pack ahead. I felt like I was riding strong and getting some good power through the pedals thanks to new Carnac bike shoes (thanks Andy!) but couldn't make it across. In the end I eased up and was caught by my swim group. We then worked well together and caught the pack ahead with only 13 athletes ahead of us. After a strong chase however almost everyone seemed to forget we still weren't leading the race and some all but gave up.
.
However myself and Paul Smith were very mindful of the 3% rule and committed ourselves to the chase. My Kinetic-One bike was spot-on. Andy (at Kinetic-One) had stripped and rebuilt it the day before the race to make sure that it ran to its maximum capabilities. And it did - enabling me to get that extra power to launch a chase in one of the worlds great elite tri's!
.
It is worth mentioning that Paul and I were both racing on a new high caffeine energy gel (www.whaspgel.com - email me if you want some) and couldn't help ourselves from pushing it, much to the benefit of the hangers on in the pack!
By the run I was paying the price for my efforts, which along with hottest day of the year meant I was spent and all but crawled round the run with the view of the athletes who sat in the group heading off into the distance. Sadly that's the game you play with elite racing but I'm proud to say I gave it my all and raced with integrity and finished 27th in a dazzling field!!
I briefly ran into a chap called Johnno after spotting his kinetic-one bike. Johnno was racing his first Olympic distance event. He seemed to have had a great day and not surprising doing 2hrs 27mins for his first Olympic distance (my first took 2:47!)
London is a great race for first timers sadly a bit late in the season, so if you want to give it a go earlier in the year I would recommend giving Windsor a try. Hopefully I'll run into a few more people soon,
Hope everyone's racing is going well,
Tom
Tom's Profile
Tom joined the elite Teambath squad in 2003 at the University of Bath to train alongside top professional athletes including Richard Allen and double Olympian Julie Dibens and developed rapidly in this World Class environment. Within two seasons he started competing at elite level, making his debut in the 2005 London Triathlon. At this point Tom began seeking a sponsor who could provide a bike worthy of World Class racing. Early in 2006 Tom met Kinetic One’s proprietor Andy Morgan and they began a sponsorship deal designed to take Tom’s riding to the next level. Last season saw Tom take his place racing at international elite level. He won the National Age Group Duathlon Championships in 20-24 as well as the National Ranking series for Duathlon in his age group. Tom competed well in the National Elite Championships before heading to Europe to take on the best athletes in Europe. These included ITU regulars Great Britain’s Marc Jenkins, Ukraine’s Andriy Glushchenko and Australia’s Pete Jacobs. These races lead to the highlights of last season; 25th ITU Holten, 37th London Triathlon Elite, 44th ITU Poland. Not bad for a 22 year old! As one of top U23 triathletes in the country he has cemented his position by gaining Elite International U23 selection for Duathlon. At the same time he is looking for a top 10 finish at an ITU Points race as well as continuing to offer frontline feedback to Kinetic-One as they continually develop their bikes at the highest levels of cycle sport. We asked Tom to write a few words about his Kinetic-One bike (no pressure to say nice things about his sponsor of course!):
We’ve high hopes for Tom this year and his bike is going to be better too. It’s lighter and stiffer than last year and component specs have improved too. Andy Morgan Kinetic-One
